BANDITS & HEROES, POETS & SAINTS - POPULAR ART FROM THE NORTHEAST OF BRAZIL
Bandits and Heroes, Poets and Saints – Popular Art from the Northeast of Brazil is a new
three-part exhibition project consisting of three independent but interrelated exhibitions:
Expressions of Faith
The Land and Its People
Poetry, Improvisation and Song
POETRY, IMPROVISATION AND SONG, the third exhibition in Bandits and Heroes will showcase the folk traditions and popular celebrations of the Northeast: the Reisado, Maracatu, Carnaval, Bumba-Meu-Boi. The isolation and poverty of the rural backlands have given rise to a culture of improvisation, exemplified in the popular poetry called Literatura de Cordel, small hand-printed folios traditionally sold hanging from strings in markets and fairs. This component of Bandits and Heroes is under development and will be ready for distribution in 2009.
