O PELOURINHO! POPULAR ART FROM THE HISTORIC HEART OF BRAZIL

O Pelourinho! Popular Art from the Historic Heart of Brazil captures the lively Africa Brazilian culture of the historic center of Salvador, one of Brazil’s oldest cities and its first capital. Paintings and sculptures by local artists depict Salvador’s history and the city’s street markets, celebrations, and aspects of the city’s religious life. Ferramentas (devotional symbols handmade in iron) present symbols the African Brazilian religion of Candomblé. This exhibition consists of 45 paintings of varying sizes, 12 wood sculptures, and 16 ferramentas. For examples of work, see artists from Salvador and Cachoeira. An interpretive brochure accompanies this exhibition.
